Preparing for the Journey In this phase of discipleship, preparation is the key. We may tend to view this as a beginner phase, but it is anything but that. It is the foundational phase to all that will come after. Without such a foundation, the journey will fail. As Jesus described in Luke 14:28-30: “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who see it will ridicule him, saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.”

Time to Participate In this phase of discipleship, we begin to move on from belief to movement, from knowing to participating. Hebrews 6:1-2 puts it this way:
Therefore, let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Journey with Jesus In this phase, it is now where the true work begins of achieving the goal for which you originally set out. No one aiming to climb a mountain stays at basecamp or the trail. The goal is just that: to climb the mountain! Joshua 14:12 states: “Now give me this mountain…If the Lord will be with me, I will prevail!”

Experiencing Christ Working Through You The goal of every mountain climb is, of course, the summit. Not all climbers will make it. It will take many would-be climbers several starts and stops. But with the help of God, becoming more transformed to the likeness of Jesus Christ is possible.
